PDM - Expert Series Webinars & Workshops
PROSTEP has combined its most popular webinars into groups of related topics and created an "Expert Series" with a focus on a deeper level of coverage for each topic. Each Expert Series is built around a central theme and consist of 3 short Webinars, and an online Workshop.
Each Webinar session is about 45 minutes long, and broadcast online at the times indicated below. The webinars are designed to introduce the attendee to the topics and provide a generalized education from beginner to intermediate.
Each Workshop is designed with a more personal and interactive approach. Through the workshop, the attendee is presented with in-depth use cases, and has the opportunity to work on situations unique to them and their company. The goal of the workshop is to help the attendees form a customized approach to their special situation. Because of this hands on approach, the workshop sizes are limited, and early registration is strongly suggested.
Please see the links below to view more information about each specific Expert Series. Attendance is not required for each session. The webinars and workshops are designed to be stand alone, as well as building upon prior concepts. However, attending all of the webinars prior to the workshop will provide a greater foundation for the concepts presented in the workshop.
Expert Series Schedule Webinars

September 16 (1pm EST) PART 1
Ready Set Migrate - Options for Substituting PDM Infrastructures << Register Now >>
Changing customer demands and frequent enhancements to applications from various system vendors create complicated choices for the engineering consumer. Should one stay with their current design infrastructure? Can one afford to upgrade? Is the thought of a large migration project daunting?
Expenses arising out of these decisions are often not license related, but caused by the process of moving all Engineering data to the new infrastructure without loosing content and context.
This Webinar Addresses:
|
- What data need to be migrated? (Meta data, properties, relationships and documents) - How does data volume challenge the existing infrastructure? - What migration options exist? (Weekend migration versus incremental approaches) - What are the Pros and Cons for different migration options? - PROSTEP customer examples. |
September 16 (2pm EST) PART 2
When to Flip the Switch - Effective Big Bang Migrations << Register Now >>
A common option for migrating from one PDM system to another is the so-called Big-Bang Migration (Weekend migration, bulk export and reload). This strategy intends to replicate all data in the target system over a short amount of time (e.g. just a weekend), thus enabling the immediate shut-down of the source system. This is an attractive option, however in reality, it also faces some challenges that must be carefully considered for optimized success.
This Webinar Addresses:
|
- How to plan a Big-bang-migration? - Specification, data model selection and mapping - Hardware considerations reflecting requirements for metadata and structure transfer - Addressing document handling and document translation (e.g. IDEAS to CATIA ) - Challenges and Risks for implementing this option - PROSTEP customer examples. |
September 16(3pm EST) PART 3
Incremental Migrations vs. Integration Solutions << Register Now >>
In many cases "weekend migrations" are not feasible. This may be due to the pure volume of data, the number of employees working with the system, or because of quality reasons that don’t allow for replicating the data without quality checking and mapping.
In such cases Incremental Migrations are an attractive alternative option. Incremental migrations keep both infrastructures (source and target) alive until all data are 100% replicated and all users are trained and moved to the target system
.
This Webinar Addresses:
|
- Concept and architecture of incremental migration solutions |
THE OPTIONAL PAID WORKSHOP ($59)*
September 23(1pm – 3:30pm EST / NY Time) WORKSHOP & EXPERT SERIES WRAP-UP
Seven Key Steps in planning for your PDM Migration project << Register Now >>
The Optional Workshop expands upon the topics introduced in the webinars, and provides for a more in-depth and interactive experience. The Workshop attendee will be able to bring their unique issues and obtain personalized recommendations. Templates, case studies, and white papers are also provided.
This Workshop Addresses:
|
1. The Importance of thoroughly specifying scope, requirements and processes for the project 2. Identifying volume and quality of engineering data that need to be migrated 3. Defining an Enterprise data model that covers the scope of the migration project 4. Mapping Source Data Model to Enterprise Data model to Target Data Model. 5. Identifying hardware requirements based on data volume and process requirements 6. Testing to fail - Best Practices and Horror Stories 7. Executing for success |
ENTERPRISE DATA MODEL DESIGN - EXPERT SERIES (November Webinar 16 & November 18 Workshop)
The Enterprise Data Model Design Expert Series is designed to give the attendee a broad overview of concepts that can greatly assist in the development of a corporate Enterprise Data Model for managing engineering data. It is tempting to want to start from scratch with a completely customized model, however existing standards can provide the organization a vast head start.
Through real life customer examples and the introduction of standards based technologies the attendee should gain a firm understanding of approaches helpful in creating and refining an Enterprise Data Model.
The Optional Workshop expands upon the topics introduced in the webinars, and provides for a more in-depth and interactive experience. The Workshop attendee will be able to bring their unique issues and obtain personalized recommendations. Templates, case studies, and white papers are also provided.

November 16 (1pm EST) PART 1
Standards demystified - Learn the jargon the comes with standards. << Register Now >>
Engineering data can be characterized by its richness of information.
The CAD system defines the geometry (e.g. simple geometry definitions, B-Splines, and volume model data)
PDM / PLM infrastructures contribute metadata, properties, product structure, configuration, effectivity and positioning.
Requirements data is managed in a Requirements Management system.
Crash data is collected with the CAE infrastructure.
With all these sources of related information any company is tempted to create their specific data model from scratch, reflecting its unique processes. However, it makes much more sense to take a look in already existing international standards and see what can be found to use as a starting point.
This Webinar Addresses:
|
- ISO (10303) STEP, General Overview - Short introduction to industrial standards like PLM XML, 3D XML and others |
November 16 (2pm EST) PART 2
ISO STEP Deep Dive - Take a closer look at Core Data Models << Register Now >>
ISO STEP application protocols are a reach source for predefined Engineering data models, covering fields like mechanic, electric and electronics, CAE-analysis and test, mechatronic and others. However, it might look challenging to navigate through such a data model without any training.
The Webinar intends to transfer necessary prerequisites to its participants that enable them to use the standards for their specific business.
This Webinar Addresses:
|
- STEP: How the standard is structured
|
November 16 (3pm EST) PART 3
OMG PLM Services Deep Dive - Web Services based Data Models << Register Now >>
While all types of XML implementations can be found in a wide variety of industries, most of end users are still apprehensive about executing a standard-based implementation on their own.
A standard based integration concept adds much more value to ones business than a proprietary point-to-point implementation, by transferring not only XML strings, but also adding semantics for metadata, properties and structures.
This Webinar shows that a standard based implementation can be based on XML technology. Using the OMG standard OMG PLM Services one can have the best of both worlds (a comprehensive XML schema derived from STEP AP214 as well as Web Services for creating and updating engineering data on-the-fly).
